The rule of thumb
As a general guide, a rooftop solar system needs roughly 80–100 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof area per kW of capacity, depending on the panel wattage and mounting layout used. A 3 kW system — common for many Hyderabad homes — typically needs around 250–300 sq. ft.
What affects the exact number
Shading from neighbouring buildings, water tanks, or trees; roof orientation and tilt; the type of mounting structure; and the specific panel wattage you choose can all shift the real number up or down. This is exactly why a physical site survey matters more than any online estimate.
Flat roofs vs sloped roofs
Most independent houses in Hyderabad have flat RCC roofs, which give more flexibility — panels can be mounted at an optimal tilt using a structure, rather than being constrained to the roof’s existing angle. Sloped roofs work too, but the achievable capacity depends on which face gets the most sun through the day.
